Beyond Calories: How NEHP and MetFix Are Restoring True Metabolic Health

Metabolic Flexibility, Broken Science, and the Future of Fitness at NEHP
I recently attended the MetFix Foundations course. It was a missing piece of the the puzzle of what we do at NEHP. It brought clarity to how we understand nutrition and energy. I’m going to do my best to simplify some of the major things I learned and how it will influence what we do at NEHP. Let’s start with: CrossFit was always the Trojan Horse.
It looked like a workout methodology — barbells, burpees, and high-intensity circuits — but underneath it was something much deeper: a platform for human health.
At NorthEast Health Performance, that’s always been our mission — to use fitness as the gateway drug to a healthier, longer, more capable life. But our recent deep dive into the MetFix Foundations course, part of the Broken Science Initiative, changed the way we see that mission.
It’s no longer just about movement, strength, or conditioning. It’s about asking better questions, understanding nutrition at the cellular level, and paying closer attention to the role of the mitochondria — the literal engines of life — and how the modern lifestyle has quietly broken them.
The Broken Science Problem
The “Broken Science” concept challenges how most people — and most institutions — define truth in science. It uncovers the broken methodologies that run ramped in science, especially in health sciences. This creates massive confusion, influences policy and education, and takes us further away from the truth. It also calls out how nutrition, medicine, and even fitness have become oversimplified systems built on outdated ideas like “calories in versus calories out.”
That model assumes your body is a math equation. But biology doesn’t run on math — it runs on chemistry and adaptation.
MetFix reconstructs the conversation around metabolic health. It starts by asking better questions:
- Why does energy storage and release vary between individuals?
- Why do two people eat the same meal, yet one thrives while the other develops insulin resistance?
- Why do so many people feel “tired but wired,” inflamed, and unable to lose weight — even in a caloric deficit?
These aren’t willpower problems. We believe they’re mitochondrial problems — and they sit at the intersection of food, stress, and behavior.
Food as Biochemistry, Not Morality
The MetFix framework sees food as information, not just fuel. When you eat, you’re sending chemical messages that either support or stress your mitochondria.
Every bite changes how your body makes and uses energy:
- Sugar spikes insulin — a hormone that helps shuttle energy into cells.
- Seed oils (high in omega-6 fats like linoleic acid) increase oxidative stress and inflammation.

The Insulin / ROS Analogy: The Bouncer at the Door
The science can be a little confusing so, here’s how MetFix breaks it down:
Imagine your cell as a nightclub.
- Sugar is the crowd trying to get in.
- Insulin is the guy opening the door, letting the guests (sugar) in.
- ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) are the bouncers — their job is to say, “We’re full.”
A little ROS? That’s good. It tells your body, “We’ve got enough energy for now.”
Too little ROS? The cell doesn’t get the message — you burn out.
Too much ROS? You get oxidative stress — the cell walls leak, mitochondria falter, and the system starts to break down.
The result?
Your body can’t efficiently release stored energy. You feel sluggish, inflamed, and stuck — even when you’re “doing everything right.”
This is why someone can be in a calorie deficit and still not lose weight. The problem isn’t always the math. It’s that their cells can’t access their energy efficiently.
The Mitochondria: Where the Magic Happens
Your mitochondria are responsible for producing ATP, the energy currency of the body.
They take inputs — glucose, fatty acids, amino acids — and, through a beautifully complex process, generate usable power.
But here’s the key:
When you consistently overload your system with refined carbohydrates and industrial seed oils, you create a mismatch between energy intake and energy processing.
That mismatch creates oxidative stress — the same imbalance that drives chronic fatigue, hormonal dysregulation, and metabolic disease.
MetFix calls this the Reactive Oxygen Species Hypothesis — a reframing of metabolic disease not as a sugar issue, but an energy control issue. It’s essentially a chain-reaction effect.
It’s not about how much fuel you have. It’s about how efficiently your mitochondria can burn it without breaking down.
Exercise: The Test for Metabolic Flexibility
This is where NEHP’s philosophy and MetFix’s science perfectly align.
Exercise is not just a calorie-burning tool. It’s the test for metabolic flexibility — your body’s ability to switch between fuel sources (fat and carbohydrate) efficiently.
When your mitochondria are healthy, you can adapt quickly. So instead of your muscles burning out quickly, they can sustain without crashing.
When your body is not metabolically flexible, meaning it’s dependent on mostly energy from carbohydrates (sugars), you crash hard, fatigue early, and rely on that fuel source for survival.
That’s why NEHP programming isn’t random.
Our workouts, recovery protocols, and nutrition support are designed to challenge — and ultimately repair — those metabolic systems.
Because the truth is:
You can’t out-train broken mitochondria. But you can rebuild them through movement, nutrition, and consistency.
